edit: Wow sorry, I’m really bad at writing dates apparently. And proofreading.
OK well I’m gonna do my best again to write this as good as possible cuz I want it to be read by Lexxy ok.
I dun care that this will take me a few hrs to write then and if Lexxy, you do read this just keep in mind that I got a learning disability and it’s hard for me to write correctly but I hope my idea and thought can get across to you.
WHY DO YOU MAKE SUCH A BIG DEAL ABOUT PEOPLE WHO SELL HOMESTUCK STUFF WITHOUT YOU AND HUSSIE’S PREMISSION!??!!
I heard ppl say to me that you said stuff like you don’t want to be competeting against your own pruduct, but alot of what you guys go after ISN’T EVEN YOUR OWN PRODUCT.
I am finally deciding to say something cuz of the big deal you are causing Gaia right now over the candy horns. Yeh they look like the Homestuck horns but some of us people want to use them for our characters that have nothing to do with Homestuck.
I find it stupid that you will take people into legal action if they sell FANMADE productucts without your premission under the idea that they are “stealing” your ideas or taking away your chances at making money with their own thing they are selling.
………….Um………………you must know how insane your fandom is right?
I watch south park and there was this episode where bands stopped playing because people were illegally downing their music. Well the lesson at the end was that if they were really good songs and bands that the fans would still pay to get into the concerts and cds anyway.
PEOPLE FUCKING LOVE YOU!!!! Even if someone does sell a print of one of the Homestuck characters or some book marks with the trolls on them or something, it’s still just fan made crap. People love you guys so much that they WILL WANT THEY OFFICIAL MERCHANDISE TOO!! Just because a fan may spend $2 on a fanmade bookmark, that doesn’t mean they won’t drop $7 for a official book mark if one was ever marketed by you guys >.>
I think you shouldn’t get on ppl’s cases about this. I think you shouldn’t threaten to take legal action against people who want to sell fanmade stuff of your series cuz you are actually harming yourelfs in the end by not allowing this.
Cuz most of ppl sell their stuff at conventions and if you don’t allow people to buy prints or shirts or whatever then you are lowering your chances of NEW PEOPLE seeing stuff from your series and getting into it and then giving you money for your official products.
Like say if some guy buys a print of Dave or whatever at a con and then some other guy sees him carrying the print around. He could go up to the guy and say something like “That character looks really cool! What’s he from?”
Then the guy would tell him of your comic.
So by not letting people sell buttons or whatever, you are limiting your advertising!!!
And it’s also not fair to say that these people who make prints or pixel horns are stealing your idea for their product cuz doesn’t Hussie do that all the time in Homestuck?
He IS USING ESTABLISHED PRODUCTS AND MEDIA THINGS FOR HIS OWN PRODUCT (Homestuck) just like Gushers……………and what about those kissing octopus things that Jade has? That wasn’t Hussie’s idea to begin with cuz one of the girls on Powerpuff Girls had a octopus plush that looks really similar.
So pls don’t be a hypocrite and don’t limit your advertising by not letting ppl make a whole $2 off a button or book mark -_-
If someone took your artwork without permission, put it on a shirt to sell, and they WERE making money off of it, wouldn’t you be mad? You would definitely try to take legal actions over it, trying to stop the production. Selling copyrighted goods without permission IS stealing.
What isn’t their own product? Buttons and bookmarks with Andrew’s characters on them counts as their product. There is not much space for the button or bookmark, so the character would take up the space.
Let’s look at your comment. “…candy horns. Yeh they look like the Homestuck horns but some of us people want to use them for our characters that have nothing to do with Homestuck.” Yes, the CHARACTERS in Gaia Online have absolutely NOTHING to do with Homestuck. What they’re wearing DOES have something to do with Homestuck. They do not “look” like the horns the trolls have, they ARE the horns. The shapes of it are unique to Homestuck.
You are correct; the more people know of Homestuck, the better. However, there are better ways of knowing WITHOUT MONEY BEING INVOLVED. Influences of friends, family, Internet. It’s FREE, and money doesn’t have to be given/taken in order to accomplish spreading the word about Homestuck.
Andrew does put real life objects and people in Homestuck. Gushers, Bill Cosby, sure! But is he making money off of those? No. He does not sell Gushers, he does not sell Bill Cosby portraits or ANYTHING. You cannot say that the Squiddles are basically the same thing as the octopus Bubbles had. They could be INFLUENCED, but it’s not the same idea. Hussie never said anything about Squiddles since they aren’t TOO big of a deal in Homestuck. With the vague remembrance of Bubble’s octopus, yes, they look similar in SHAPE, but not in looks. I do not recall that octopus having magnets underneath so “tangle buddies” can be formed.
There are good points in this. They just need to be reinforced better. I am not your enemy, nor your friend. I’m just someone sick of both sides. You, who take the offenses and throw them back at the offenders, and the others who terrorize you, tormenting you to “get off the Internet”. Each side can both be more MATURE.
Well fucking duh if someone takes a official image of a chara or something and slaps in a tshirt or bookmark or whatever then that is something to sue over!! Not if its just fanart though >__<
That’s just dumb and same with the whole “better ways to tell ppl about homestuck” yeah there is the net but most of these problems of lexxy saying noone can sell anything of my comic draws from ppl at conventions where there are HUGE GATHERINGS of people in the thousands!! Word of mouth is gonna reach ppl alot fater in a place like then then telling your friends -.-
and your arguement about Hussie not making any money off the media/product stuff he takes is retarded. You just another one of his white knight fans that goes around arresting ppl at cons or something if they have something of homestuck they are selling ~__~
He IS making money off of the stuff he uses from thigns that aren’t his cuz he is using those elements to make a product. That product is Homestuck. Without Betty Crocker he could not have all the “jokes” that makes up homestuck.
It’s like if I wanted to build something out of clay. I need some wire to build the clay around. If i just went straight to the clay the little creature I was making would crumble and fall apart T_T;;;
and if you say the octopus and other stuffs just draw inspiration from other sources and since it doesn’t look exactly like the original then it’s ok???
WTF ok well then in that case all these fanartist stuff should be ok to sell cuz they draw the homestuck characs in there own styles and it doesn’t look exactly like how hussie and his gf draws it -_-
but whatever your pissing me off now and you also implied that those ppl telling me I should get off the net are right in a sense so I’m just gonna block you and I’m tired of typing like this cuz its to time consume.
Aww I hope you feel better and I also hope that whatever is frustrating you will soon subside. We all know that artists can be misunderstood by family and friends. They are the sensitive ones, their emotions and frustrations are often overlooked or misinterpreted by those who do not understand an artists' obsession with perfection. Just take a deep breath, relax and meditate for a bit, maybe take a break for a while, It will pay off in the long run. Hope you feel better soon :)
Thank you for this sweet message. It has made me smile. Sadly what is frustrating me won’t subside. I have permanent nerve damage in my eyes, and it has been slowly degenerating them as I get older. I am hoping to find another solution to the problem…but I am not so sure how likely my chances are.
Thank you again though for your well wishes. Maybe a break is just what I need…even though I have a lot of stuff I actually want to do art-wise.
I feel like I should be working on something right now...
…but I’m just too depressed still.
No one in my personal/irl life who I have told about the situation is really understanding how much this is hurting me (except for Jimm). My family is all just looking at me weird and saying, “What’s the big deal? Why can’t you just do it?”
I tried explaining it in terms maybe they could understand…I said that it would be like telling an athlete they had to stop working out or playing their sport every 30 minutes….they would be extremely frustrated, nor could they get much done and accomplish what they need to.
I said an athlete needs to warm up and stretch before playing their sport. If they had to stop every 30 minutes in the middle of their sport, then they would have to warm up and stretch all over again.
It takes 30 minutes just for them to do that.
My mom still just looked at me with a well that’s different kind of face, and responded with, “Well it’s just what you have to do unless you want to go blind.”
Jimm and I are talking about getting a second opinion, but I’m afraid this just might be the “denial” part of the acceptance stage.
