There are two reasons why an artists’ work would be improving when it comes to adding more details.
(1) They are growing as an artist, developing their skills on a deeper level through hard work, studying, and practice.
(2) They are just becoming more OCD with increased anxiety.
What one do you think I am?

I’m really having a hard time drawing lately.
I was okay for a little bit, but now I feel like I’m back in my rut :(
Would it be “okay” or acceptable in “the art world”, if redrew bad/funny yaoi panels from mangas with Homestuck charas? Like I did here.
Or is that like…not a cool thing to do in terms of being an artist D:

Call for Artists!
Alright, so, Tumblr just ate an earlier version of this, so I’m gonna sum it up.
I’m in need for an artist on a webcomic I’m working on. I had an artist lined up, but plans have changed (though she will contribute creatively to the comic). I’m going to be posting a scene from a screenplay version of the comic I wrote for practice purposes, and I’d like anyone who’s interested to send character sketches of the two main characters (from the scene) as well as examples of color work if applicable to either this tumblr or to thegamerdon@gmail.com. I’d prefer a western comic book style look; as much as I enjoy anime-style, it’s not necessarily what I have in mind. I’m open to creative interpretation on that regard, in any case.
Keep in mind that the characters’ outfits in this scene do not reflect the outfits they wear for most of the series.
Without further ado…the scene!

“Beware of Artists” - Actual poster issued by Senator Joseph McCarthy in 1950s, at height of the red scare.
My absolute favorite poster as of now.
Very cool! That’s right, we all have the potential to be “dangerous!”

I keep seing people being down on themselves all across Tumblr. And I want to say stuff to you guys.
I think that the reason that so many Tumblrites have lots of issues with depression and sadness and anxiety is that we are a creative, expressive bunch of people, and that kind of brain usually comes at the cost of personal mental health.
Seriously, look at anyone who has created some work of art that you love. All of these songs and paintings and comics and writing comes from people who have had to wrestle with their own brain time and time and time again. They are able to do what they do because they have the kind of talent and intelligence and empathy that enables work that speaks to people. You can’t make something so powerful if you don’t have humility, if you don’t have understanding of what it means to feel like shit sometimes and to deal with that constructively by making art. Whether you think it’s crappy or whatever is irrelevant— you have to put these things out there because it’s better to have it out in the world than causing a ruckus inside your brain.
Not gonna lie, I feel kind of hypocritical right now because I have (and still do) deal with a lot of issues of self-esteem and depression and the like. I’m one of these people who are “all down on themselves”. But I think that, as shitty as those things are and no matter how much I hate it, having that experience makes me want to understand and help and experience other people even more. It makes me see all of you talented, amazing people who are so interesting and funny and kind and smart and who can’t see these things in themselves and want to shooshpap you until you understand that yes, you are all of these things.
You’re fucking awesome. You’re the kind of people that write the stories and create the worlds that people fall in love with, that make fandom possible.
And even if you feel like crap, that crap is something that can be a resource. It can be the fodder for your creative brain that probably doesn’t shut up at night— so get out of bed and write or draw or play something and put those thoughts outside of yourself and come back to them some other time.
And don’t be afraid to get help. I resisted therapy for years and years and when I finally gave in and went, it turned out to be one of the best things I ever did with my life. Same goes for medication— it’s exactly the same as putting a cast on a broken leg, or physical therapy for an injury. It’s not a crutch and it’s not a cure-all, but it’s a tool to help you with a problem that isn’t just in your head. It’s not your fault, but you can do something about it. Get help. It’s not weakness. It takes more strength to get help than it does to use the inertia of “no I’ve got to handle this on my own” to justify staying in the same rut.
I could go on and on about drama and relationship woes and things of that nature, but I won’t, because I don’t know your lives. However, I do know that you can’t give up. No matter how much you don’t want to get out of bed, you can’t give up. Even if continuing on is just a way to say “Fuck you” to depression and anxiety, that’s enough.
I can’t make you see things in yourself that you don’t see, but I just want you all to know that even if you can’t see it there are other people out there who believe in you, and who know that their belief is not misplaced. We know because we’ve seen the beautiful things that you write and make and those kind of things don’t come from people who aren’t creative and empathetic and worth getting to know.
Also, just so you know, I’m digitally hugging you so hard right now.
I love every word of this.

when an artist wants to show you their art
or a writer wants you to read what they’ve written
it’s quite often an expression of trust
because a poem or a story or a painting are often things that come from the heart
little pieces of the artists themselves
and if they’re willing to share it with you
you should appreciate it

I just really hate it when people overprice art. It may be good art…but not wroth $12. Even if its really money, or points (from DA). I’m not trying to sound rude, but i know a lot of people who overprice they’re commissions, and most are famous.
submitted by -kawaiiansteve

Uhhh… would you work for less than minimum wage?
There’s this horrible expectation that artists do things for free or for a ridiculously low price because it’s “not work” and “you love doing it, right?”
It’s frustrating and it’s created an environment where artists have to constantly undersell themselves.

Cyber bullying against other artists.
This was originally uploaded to my deviantART journal.
Well, I’m really sick of cyber bullying around here. If you haven’t seen it around deviantART, you’re lucky because it breaks my heart. It’s so ridiculous. I’ve seen a lot of it around the anime/manga community lately.
I am not going to name any users here.
But seriously. You guys need to stop. I’m sure you know who I am trying to direct if you’ve seen it around. Anyway—
Dear cyber bullies,
It’s NOT right to send notes to people saying:
-Go die because they’re heavily influenced by someone’s art
-They’re worthless
-You want a commission, give them references, etc, then when the artist notes you back, telling them their art is shit
It’s NOT right to:
-write hate comments on someone’s page
-make a new account several times after being blocked just to harass someone again
-harass the commissioners and adoptable buyers of other artists
-attack someone on multiple websites because you don’t think one is enough
What makes you think you can go around saying this stuff? You’re not better than anyone else.
It hurts me to see this going around. Cyber bullying is horrible, in the past I was called an art thief (even though I showed WIPs) and those few comments by that one deviant hurt my feelings pretty bad. I blocked them because they were just being a troll but eh, it still sucked. I haven’t dealt with too many actual trolls myself, most of them are trying really hard to be my friend and I ignore them when they’re rude; however, there’s some people that deal with actual troll accounts all the time.
Imagine getting tons of hate mail every day in your mail box? You think you’ll like that sort of attention? No! It can push people down the wrong path and really bring them down in spirit.
Art is a form of self expression. The way you draw can be heavily influenced by other artists or famous mangakas- and if it is, you should simply admit it when asked about inspiration. It’s as simple as that. As the “original” artist or mangaka, there’s a line which you need to draw (for heavy referencing, style “copying”, etc), but you need to be mature about it. Sending your watchers and followers over to the artist who is heavily influenced by you to “attack” them is very childish. It reminds me of children in a playground ganging up on one individual. You can easily lose a lot of respect you’ve gained from the public this way and people will always remember what you did. Now sure, you might say, “Well I don’t care what people think”.. Well, I’d like to laugh at that because obviously you do. You’re sending your supporters to attack someone, you submit your art online so people can view and give you feedback— otherwise, you’d just draw for yourself at home and never upload.
People, in general, care what others think.
Most of like to share our art, but not when it brings bad attention with every single upload who would want to keep sharing?
Please stop it. There’s more to someone than just their art. Don’t forget the other side of the computer that they’re on. Someone’s sitting there that has to take in all the shit and try to bare with it.
Please, please, stop attacking others. Noting someone without an intention to truly hurt them is fine- it really is, but bashing them, telling them they should die, or sending others over for bullying instead of dealing with the situation directly yourself - is not.
Now, I know cyber bullying will never go away. Bullying in general will always exist because we are humans, we grow jealous and become defensive and say horrible things, but we can at least take a chill pill and ease up on it around here.
Remember, stuff on the internet can go viral in minutes. Same goes for dArama on deviantART.
Please reconsider what you’re doing before hitting that send or submit button.
There’s a difference between talking things out maturely and bullying.
Thank you for your time.
It’s really bugged me and actually has given me a horrible distraction from my art because I see it all around dA ;_; I feel better getting this off my chest.
Comments: Feel free to write about your past experiences if you’d like or comment on how you feel about this.
Please do not mention names of ANY users in the comments, it’s pretty rude especially on this confession. I hope there’s some of you who will help spread how I feel about this.
Please read every word of this.
Attacking someone can get really out of control. What’s worse is that it can travel off the Internet over to that person’s real life if someone popular enough online has groupies that condone the bullying.
I’m speaking from personal experience. I will never forget an AA I did a few years ago, where I met someone that was connected to the group of people who enjoyed trolling me. She “knew” who I was from online, and was surprised to see me in the AA…since my art is considered shit to these people.
I tried my best to make a friend out of an “enemy”. I tried to be nice to her. I hung out with her a bit. I wanted to show her I wasn’t actually all those nasty things that I got called online.
I gave her a small piece of artwork I made since she was into the show it was from as well.
You know what she did? She slapped it on the middle of her table and proceeded to tell people that the piece of artwork was hers, or she left out the fact that it was mine (and I was somewhat right across from her—pointing distance/hearing distance) when the people fancied over the piece.
She ended up getting tons of commissions of said character that was featured on the artwork that weekend, while I got none of the character since my table came after hers with the way the AA was flowing.
I later found out that her and my troll group’s ring leader had been conspiring about “screwing me over” over on tumblr.
So I’ll say it again. Please read all of the above…because it can get pretty serious and actually hurt people off the internet as well.

Wtf did I just read….
“Sex is not bad. Having a fetish is not bad. But when you spend money for someone to draw a picture relating to your fetish, you’ve gone too far. ”
I don’t even know what sort of reaction gif to give that?Laughing?
Eye roll?
No?
Face Palm?

And then they go on to continue to gripe about it MORE— how you should be ashamed to buy fetish/porn art, and how an artist should in insulted if asked to make such.
…I would reblog the actual post, but I’ve got too much to do today, and I don’t have time for an Internet argument.

For those who want to see just my Chainmaille…
…here’s my new blog dedicated to just my art. http://gilsarmory.tumblr.com/
I’m still using this one, but as you can tell from the title, it’s going to be my “normal” blarg, whereas Rings, Pliers & Co. is my “serious buisiness” blog.
Thank you all for following me, and if you are interested in my artsy stuff, follow my new blog too!

porn and sexual things =/= objectifying women.
Exactly. Im a woman, I’m into women’s rights, and I draw porn. A LOT of porn. Its like saying women don’t and shouldn’t enjoy smut. Why the hell does such a thing matter? No one is making you look at the porn we draw, so why hate us for it?
This. I draw mostly porn, and I’m for women’s rights AND men’s rights. I’m for both sexes having equality….so on that note, I wonder what OP would say about people who “objectify” men in their art as well?
