can you believe there are people who have grown up on the internet without ever having read this
Lewl, I remember this,
because I’m so fucking old. I’m wondering if anyone actually knows what LJ is anymore, besides people in Russia. That’s how they wanted it though.
Browsing tumblr, looking for that perfect hipster text over unrelated image that describes exactly how I’m feeling, but yet not too announcing.
Well I couldn’t find such an instagram, and instead just pretty much found this gpoy.
I’ve been having a super bad week due to bull-shit happening to me in real life, over being physically sick as well. So naturally, I’m in a super bad mood, and I find myself not being the nicest little push-over that I normally am online as of late…
I’m sorry…I know it doesn’t excuse my actions, and I should be the better person, but I’m just in a mood where I’m tired of rolling over and taking people’s shit, even if it is online…
And yeah, I know that is very stupid of me, and I know it’s just the net…but I guess I am just writing this to answer anyone wondering how/why I had stopped being so sweet within a day or two.
Also, people love drama and assholery, so I’m sure I’ll get more watchers now or something.
I’m surprised this hasn’t happened with us yet…since our name, for over a year now, has been “ShutYourDamnKidsUp”…since we live right in the middle of screaming-breeder central.
Actually, now that I think about it…she’s not so much a Mary Sue, but she’s just “dark and edgy”…and I know according to the Internet world, that’s just as bad and laughable.
I don’t care though, I just like playing insane characters.
After joining art-websites (such as DeviantArt), I’ve learned of something really disturbing.
For some weird, stupid reason I can’t even imagine or understand, everyone seems to think it against the law if a person does not improve artwise. I see so much hate, bashing and flaming of countless artists - simply because they don’t improve.
To all the people reading this, and who go by this kind of logic, I sincerely hope you’re able to overcome this illogical way of thinking once I finish.
I’m an artist myself, but like countless other artists on sites like DeviantArt, I’m not striving to become the next Picasso. Art is nothing but a hobby of mine. I do it for fun, when I’m bored or in class. I have other hobbies I DO take seriously, but I find it disturbing that the majority of people in online art communities think that bashing is justified, if the bashed is someone whose art doesn’t seem to improve.
As an example, there are lots of ridiculously popular people on DeviantArt, and their artworks in their galleries all look the same and have the same level of skill: they basically haven’t improved throughout their time on this website; they’ve just drawn, submitted, and voila. People insult these artists though like there’s no tomorrow, and we all know the usual butthurt sentence going something along the lines of “this person is so popular and they never improve!! they suck!!”. The artists who are popular though didn’t make themselves popular. Other people did. All the artists did was submit their works.
I’m well aware that some artists who are also very popular have done things or do things that are not alright, and so that has helped them earn a bad reputation. But I want to kill the idea that ANY artist who doesn’t improve deserves bashing for that specific reason. Like it isn’t my business to demand ANYONE to improve artwise, it’s not anyone else’s business or right to demand that others improve artwise. It’s their art, and everyone else’s art is everyone else’s art.
I’m sick of this and it needs to stop. I will never fathom why people think they are in any right to tell off people who don’t improve. Believe it or not, art is nothing more than a hobby to loads of people. I can’t believe I have to even say that, but it seems that way too many people don’t realize it. So there you have it, the astonishing, amazing truth. Don’t fall off your chairs now.
This will be a huge shock to a lot of people, but people not improving their art DOES NOT justify you, me or anyone else bashing them for that reason.
It’s NOT against any laws to have a hobby you’re unserious about. Stop thinking you’re in ANY right to say a person is doing something wrong by not improving or striving/aiming to improve, because you are most certainly not.
Lastly, to all of you who know with yourselves that you’re the kind of person I’m aiming to teach a lesson… Tell me, when friends or family or random people sing in the shower, do you bash them too for not improving their singing?
I’m so happy someone else shares this view as me. While art is more than just a hobby for me, I do strive to always get better personally…but, I agree 100% with everything that was said here.
There was a time in my life where I did art as a hobby, and I didn’t care about improving. I just drew for fun, but once it became more than a pass-time for me (or to stay awake in class), then I cared about improving for myself.
I was also [too] opened about my “art as a hobby” stance, and I found other artists didn’t respect that. So I had constant badgering by people both online and offline.
It is not your job to make sure that other people improve, unless you are a professor and that person is taking a class under you.
Everyone says that “I’m just trying to help”, however, often that help comes in the form of ridicule. If you are uneducated about how to critique properly, then that “helping” is going to be seen as harassment by the person you are trying to aide, and it’s going to just lead to frustration on both parties.
Have you ever heard the saying, “You can’t help those people that don’t want to be helped?” If a person doesn’t want to improve, then no amount of [negative] swaying them is going to make them want to improve.
So as OP said, please stop the bashing. I’m speaking from experience here (with both my past self and other people I know who are hobby artists). If you REALLY care about helping someone with their art, and if you REALLY feel it’s your job to make them get better, then try one of the following instead of constantly hounding or making fun of that person in question.
(1) Instead of bashing their art, praise their art. Even if they are very lowed skilled. Tell them you think they have potential, and one day you would like to see even more elaborate pieces from then, because you think that would be really cool.
It’s positive support, instead of negative. You don’t actually use the words “You should try to improve more.”
Most of the time hobby or “for fun” artists ARE just hobby artists because they feel they are not good enough to be anything more. They get too much negative criticism along the way, so they get a “why even bother” attitude.
If people give them positive feed back (ass pats as the net likes to call it), that WILL encourage the person to do MORE with their art. That will make them WANT to draw more and they might even pick up some art books to learn—thus improve.
So there, you have ultimately helped them in the end!
(2) Don’t worry about them. Just worry about your own art. Spend the time you would provoking the artist you want to help to improve your own art. Become awesome. Grow yourself. Be so amazing that less-skilled artists will look up to you and feel something. Then, maybe they will want to be like you…and that will jump start their desire to improve.
I wonder if this will pick up steam, it could be interesting.
I would also like to add, that a consumer should still be buying products from independent companies…but consider this Black March for major labels.
Also, while it may be true that sales will then just pick up (or be higher) in April, participating in Black March gives a clear message.
If I want to write an actual blog entry, like…”Dear diary, today I did this…”…I can’t use tumblr for that, right?
That’s more like
Livejournal Dreamwidth stuff?
omg bitching about peoples drawing of perspective an anatomy is so annoying like its really hard to get perspective and anatomy perfectly correct every single time you draw something jesus christ it doesnt make you a bad person if you get it wrong
(however when like official artists like say people who draw famous comic books or whatever disregard anatomy for the sake of making female characters “sexier” for example like when they draw the spine just going allllllll the way round so you can see the ass and the titties, that is kinda annoying
but really like saying theyre a horrible artist or having an actual go at them when its someone who draws on the internet as a hobby pretty much is just
like it actually makes me kinda scared??? because i know my drawings are often sketchy or incorrectly drawn or whatever but i just do it for fun
but like im made to feel scared people are out there like severely judging me because my drawn anatomy and perspectives arent perfect
>people are out there like severely judging me
The sad truth is, that people are judging you.
Everyone Most people judge s you. You are always going to be judge in life, if you like it or not.
It’s human nature to judge. People do it for various reasons, but mostly because people judge them. It’s a vicious circle. Person A is judging person B, because Person X is judging person A.
They need to pick on you about something in order to feel better about themselves. It’s the old “school yard bully” effect. Person A knows they are not perfect and had their ego damaged by person X, so they do the same to person B who is less artistically skilled than them in order to make themselves feel better.
There are some truly generous and kind artists out there who are not picking on you though, but instead they are trying to help you.
Sometimes it can be very difficult to tell the difference between someone who is just trying to bully/make fun of you, and someone who wants to help you….but these people do exist.
It’s the difference between negative and positive judging.
The negative person will judge you to make themselves feel better by making fun of your imperfections, while the positive person will judge you to make themselves feel better by helping you…which then should make you feel better for being helped and enlightened.
That then goes back to the old, “helping others can help yourself” rule.
Unfortunately people are more interested in negatively and drama (take your 5 O’clock news for example).
There are also fads in art, and right now perfect anatomy is a fad, if people want to admit it or not. A few years ago it was anime art as a fad. Yes, there was a time when people go praised for drawing perfect anime art (which is imperfect anatomy).
I just hope you can do your best to weed past the negative judges, and find some sort of zen balance between the positive judges and doing the art you want to do.
